PRG4
Description
The PRG4 gene encodes a protein called lubricin, a major component of synovial fluid that plays a crucial role in joint lubrication and protection. Lubricin reduces friction between cartilage surfaces, allowing smooth joint movement and preventing wear and tear. It also possesses anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to joint health. Mutations in the PRG4 gene can lead to various joint disorders characterized by pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
