PMM2 : phosphomannomutase 2
Description
The PMM2 (phosphomannomutase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
The PMM2 gene provides instructions for creating the phosphomannomutase 2 (PMM2) enzyme. This enzyme plays a role in glycosylation, a process that attaches sugar molecule groups (oligosaccharides) to proteins. Oligosaccharides are chains of small sugar molecules. Glycosylation modifies proteins to enhance their functionality. PMM2 converts mannose-6-phosphate into mannose-1-phosphate during the early stages of glycosylation. Subsequently, mannose-1-phosphate is converted into GDP-mannose, which then transfers its mannose molecule to the growing oligosaccharide chain. The complete oligosaccharide, after gaining the required number of sugar molecules, can then bind to a protein.
PMM2 is involved in the synthesis of GDP-mannose and dolichol-phosphate-mannose, both crucial for mannosyl transfer reactions.
