PDE6C : phosphodiesterase 6C
Description
The PDE6C (phosphodiesterase 6C) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.
The PDE6C gene provides instructions for making the alpha-prime subunit of cone-specific phosphodiesterase, an enzyme found exclusively in cone photoreceptor cells within the retina. Cones are responsible for vision in bright light and color vision. When light enters the eye, it activates pigments in photoreceptor cells, triggering a series of chemical reactions leading to an electrical signal interpreted by the brain as vision. This process, called phototransduction, involves PDE6C converting cGMP to 5'-GMP in cones, causing the closure of certain cell membrane channels and triggering visual signal transmission to the brain.
