GAS1
Description
The GAS1 (growth arrest specific 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
GAS1, or Growth arrest-specific protein 1, is a protein encoded by the GAS1 gene in humans. It plays a crucial role in growth suppression by blocking entry into the S phase of the cell cycle and preventing the proliferation of both normal and transformed cells. This suggests that GAS1 may act as a tumor suppressor gene. The GAS1 gene was initially identified in growth-arrested mouse cells and was one of six genes found to block the transition from the G0 to S phase in NIH3T3 cells. Subsequent research has shown that overexpression of GAS1 can inhibit tumor growth and progression, particularly in gliomas. The gene is located on chromosome 9q21.3-22.1, a region known as a fragile site. Studies have suggested that GAS1 may also play a role in the recurrence and metastasis of colon cancer.
