The NCAPD3 (non-SMC condensin II complex subunit D3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.

NCAPD3, also known as CAP-D3, is a protein encoded by the NCAPD3 gene. It is a subunit of the condensin II complex, a large protein complex involved in chromosome condensation.

NCAPD3 is a regulatory subunit of the condensin-2 complex. This complex plays a key role in establishing mitotic chromosome architecture and maintaining the physical rigidity of the chromatid axis. NCAPD3 may facilitate the resolution of intertwined double-strand DNA catenanes between sister chromatids. Condensin-mediated compaction increases tension in these catenated sister chromatids, directing type II topoisomerase-mediated strand exchanges for chromatid decatenation. NCAPD3 is particularly crucial for decatenation of ultrafine DNA bridges at the centromere during anaphase. In early neurogenesis, NCAPD3 is essential for ensuring accurate mitotic chromosome condensation in neural stem cells, ultimately influencing neuron pool size and cortical development.

NCAPD3 is also known as CAP-D3, CAPD3, MCPH22, hCAP-D3, hHCP-6, hcp-6.
