NANS

Description

The NANS (N-acetylneuraminate synthase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

The NANS gene encodes sialic acid synthase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of sialic acids. This enzyme uses N-acetylmannosamine 6-phosphate and mannose 6-phosphate as substrates to produce phosphorylated forms of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and 2-keto-3-deoxy-D-glycero-D-galacto-nononic acid (KDN), respectively. Notably, it exhibits a higher activity towards the Neu5Ac phosphate product. When expressed in insect cells, this gene leads to the production of Neu5Ac and KDN. The NANS gene shares similarities with the E. coli sialic acid synthase gene neuB and can partially restore sialic acid synthase activity in an E. coli neuB-negative mutant.

The NANS gene encodes sialic acid synthase, an enzyme that produces N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and 2-keto-3-deoxy-D-glycero-D-galacto-nononic acid (KDN). It can utilize N-acetylmannosamine 6-phosphate and mannose 6-phosphate as substrates to generate phosphorylated forms of Neu5Ac and KDN.

NANS is also known as HEL-S-100, SAS, SEMDCG, SEMDG.
