MYMK

Description

The MYMK (myomaker, myoblast fusion factor) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

Myomaker, also known as Myoblast Fusion Maker, is a myoblast-specific protein that plays a crucial role in myoblast fusion, a process essential for the formation of multinucleated muscle fibers. This protein actively participates in the membrane fusion reaction by mediating the mixing of cell membrane lipids (hemifusion) upstream of MYMX. Interestingly, it can function independently of MYMX. Myomaker is involved in skeletal muscle regeneration by facilitating the fusion of satellite cells (muscle stem cells) with injured myofibers, thereby contributing to muscle repair. It also plays a role in skeletal muscle hypertrophy, likely by mediating the fusion of satellite cells with myofibers. Evidence supporting these functions includes UniProtKB:Q9D1N4 and PubMed:28681861.

MYMK is also known as MYOMAKER, TMEM226, TMEM8C.
