MRPS28

Description

The MRPS28 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S28) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

The MRPS28 gene encodes a protein known as 28S ribosomal protein S28, mitochondrial. This protein is a component of the mitochondrial ribosomes, which are responsible for protein synthesis within the mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes are made up of two subunits, a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins, including MRPS28, are encoded by nuclear genes. While mitochondrial ribosomes share some similarities with prokaryotic ribosomes, they also have significant differences, particularly in their protein composition. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome can vary greatly in sequence and biochemical properties between species, making it difficult to identify them solely based on sequence homology. The MRPS28 gene encodes a protein that has been previously referred to as mitochondrial ribosomal protein S35 in the literature.

MRPS28 is also known as COXPD47, HSPC007, MRP-S28, MRP-S35, MRPS35.
