MRPS25

Description

The MRPS25 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S25) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

MRPS25 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S25) is a protein encoded by the MRPS25 gene in humans. It plays a crucial role in protein synthesis within the mitochondria. Mitochondria have their own ribosomes (mitoribosomes) composed of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. The proteins in mitoribosomes are encoded by nuclear genes, including MRPS25, and are essential for the assembly and function of these organelles. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, which have a reversed protein-to-rRNA ratio, mitoribosomes have a higher proportion of protein (75%). Moreover, mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. MRPS25 is specifically a component of the 28S subunit. Interestingly, a pseudogene corresponding to MRPS25 is found on chromosome 4.

MRPS25 is also known as COXPD50, MRP-S25, RPMS25, mS25.
