MRPS22

Description

The MRPS22 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S22) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

The MRPS22 gene encodes for the 28S ribosomal protein S22, mitochondrial, which is a protein involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) are composed of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with MRPS22 being a component of the small subunit. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS22 protein does not have a counterpart in prokaryotic or fungal-mitochondrial ribosomes. The MRPS22 gene lies telomeric of and is transcribed in the opposite direction from the forkhead box L2 gene. A pseudogene corresponding to MRPS22 is located on chromosome Xq.

MRPS22 is also known as C3orf5, COXPD5, GIBT, GK002, MRP-S22, ODG7, RPMS22, mS22.
