MRPS16

Description

The MRPS16 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S16) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 10.

The MRPS16 gene encodes 28S ribosomal protein S16, mitochondrial, a protein that plays a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mammalian mitochondria have their own ribosomes, called mitoribosomes, which consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. These mitoribosomes differ from prokaryotic ribosomes in their protein-to-RNA composition and the absence of a 5S rRNA. MRPS16 encodes a protein that belongs to the ribosomal protein S16P family and is highly conserved between mammalian and yeast mitochondria. The gene has three pseudogenes located at 8q21.3, 20q13.32, and 22q12-q13.1.

MRPS16 is also known as CGI-132, COXPD2, MRP-S16, RPMS16, S16mt, bS16m.
