MRPL3

Description

The MRPL3 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein L3) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 3.

MRPL3 is a protein encoded by the MRPL3 gene in humans. It's part of the mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) responsible for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes are distinct from cytoplasmic ribosomes, with a different composition of proteins and RNA. MRPL3 specifically belongs to the 39S subunit, the larger of the two ribosomal subunits. Mutations in the MRPL3 gene have been linked to mitochondrial cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart muscle.

MRPL3, also known as mitochondrial ribosomal protein L3, is a crucial component of the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (mt-LSU). This subunit plays a vital role in protein synthesis within mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of two subunits, a small (28S) and a large (39S) subunit. The mt-LSU contains a 16S rRNA (16S mt-rRNA), a copy of mitochondrial valine transfer RNA (mt-tRNA(Val)), and 52 different proteins, including MRPL3. These proteins are essential for the assembly and function of the mt-LSU, ensuring efficient translation of mitochondrial DNA into proteins required for cellular respiration.

MRPL3 is also known as COXPD9, MRL3, RPML3, uL3m.
