MPO

Description

The myeloperoxidase (MPO) gene encodes for an enzyme crucial in the immune system‘s response to infection. Found within neutrophils, white blood cells that combat bacteria and fungi, MPO generates potent antimicrobial agents. It catalyzes the formation of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a highly reactive compound that effectively destroys pathogens. This gene‘s activity plays a vital role in innate immunity, the body‘s first line of defense against invaders. However, dysregulation of MPO can contribute to inflammation and various autoimmune disorders.
