MLC1 : modulator of VRAC current 1

Description

The MLC1 (modulator of VRAC current 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 22.

The MLC1 gene provides instructions for producing a protein primarily found in the brain, spleen, and white blood cells. Within the brain, this protein is located in astroglial cells, which are a type of glial cell responsible for protecting and maintaining neurons. The MLC1 protein functions at junctions between astroglial cells. Its role at these junctions is not fully understood, but research suggests it may regulate fluid flow into cells or cell adhesion. Studies also indicate that MLC1 may be involved in transporting molecules across the blood-brain and brain-cerebrospinal fluid barriers, protecting the brain's delicate nerve tissue.

MLC1 regulates astrocyte responses to low osmotic pressure by increasing calcium flow into the cells.

MLC1 is also known as LVM, MLC, VL.
