METTL23

Description

The METTL23 (methyltransferase 23, arginine) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

METTL23 is a histone methyltransferase that plays a crucial role in gene regulation and epigenetic reprogramming. It specifically dimethylates histone H3 at arginine 17 (H3R17me2a), forming an asymmetric dimethylarginine modification. This methylation event contributes to chromatin remodeling, ultimately activating transcription. Additionally, METTL23 acts as a maternal factor during fertilization, participating in the epigenetic reprogramming of the paternal genome. It mediates H3R17me2a, promoting the incorporation of histone H3.3 into the male pronucleus. This process leads to the recruitment of TET3, an enzyme involved in DNA demethylation, ultimately contributing to the reprogramming of the paternal genome.

METTL23 is also known as C17orf95, MRT44.
