Description

The LTC4S (leukotriene C4 synthase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 5.

LTC4S is an enzyme that converts leukotriene A4 and glutathione to create leukotriene C4. It is a member of the MAPEG family of transmembrane proteins. LTC4S is localized on the outer nuclear membrane and endoplasmic reticulum, forming a complex with 5-Lipoxygenase-activating protein. It is remotely related to microsomal glutathione S-transferase. LTC4S is involved in the production of leukotrienes, which are potent biological compounds derived from arachidonic acid. Leukotrienes are implicated as mediators of anaphylaxis and inflammatory conditions such as asthma.

LTC4S catalyzes the specific conjugation of leukotriene A4 with reduced glutathione (GSH) to form leukotriene C4. This process is crucial for the biosynthesis of cysteinyl leukotrienes, potent biological compounds involved in inflammation and anaphylaxis. LTC4S also catalyzes the transfer of a glutathionyl group from GSH to 13(S),14(S)-epoxy-docosahexaenoic acid, forming maresin conjugate in tissue regeneration 1 (MCTR1). MCTR1 is a bioactive lipid mediator with potent anti-inflammatory and proresolving actions.
