LDHB : lactate dehydrogenase B

Description

The LDHB (lactate dehydrogenase B) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12.

The LDHB gene instructs the body to produce a protein called lactate dehydrogenase-B (LDHB), a subunit of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme exists in five different forms, each composed of four protein subunits. LDHB combines with subunits from another gene, LDHA, to create these different forms. The lactate dehydrogenase enzyme plays a crucial role in energy production for cells throughout the body. It converts pyruvate, a product of glucose breakdown, into lactate, which can be used for energy. Some forms of the enzyme can also convert lactate back into pyruvate. The specific form of lactate dehydrogenase composed entirely of LDHB subunits is found mainly in heart muscle. This form converts lactate to pyruvate.

LDHB is also known as HEL-S-281, LDH-B, LDH-H, LDHBD, TRG-5.
