LAMB1

Description

The LAMB1 (laminin subunit beta 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

Laminin subunit beta-1 is a protein encoded by the LAMB1 gene in humans. Laminins, a family of extracellular matrix glycoproteins, are the primary noncollagenous components of basement membranes. They are implicated in various biological processes, including cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins consist of three non-identical chains: laminin alpha, beta, and gamma, forming a cruciform structure with three short arms and a long arm composed of all three chains. Each laminin chain is a multidomain protein encoded by a distinct gene, with several isoforms described. Different alpha, beta, and gamma chain isomers combine to create different heterotrimeric laminin isoforms, designated by Arabic numerals in the order of their discovery. For example, the alpha1beta1gamma1 heterotrimer is laminin 1. The biological functions of the different chains and trimer molecules are largely unknown, but some chains exhibit distinct tissue distributions, suggesting diverse functions in vivo. The LAMB1 gene encodes the beta chain isoform laminin, beta 1.

Laminin subunit beta-1, a component of various laminin isoforms, plays a crucial role in cell attachment, migration, and tissue organization during embryonic development. It interacts with other extracellular matrix components, mediating these processes. In the cerebral cortex, laminin beta-1 is involved in establishing the laminar architecture. It is essential for the integrity of the basement membrane/glia limitans, serving as an anchor point for radial glial cells' endfeet and acting as a physical barrier for migrating neurons. Radial glial cells are vital for cerebral cortical development, acting as both the proliferative unit and a scaffold for migrating neurons.

LAMB1 is also known as CLM, LIS5.
