KLKB1 : kallikrein B1
Description
The KLKB1 (kallikrein B1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
The KLKB1 gene provides instructions for making prekallikrein, a protein produced in the liver and circulating in the blood. Prekallikrein is converted to plasma kallikrein by factor XII. Plasma kallikrein, along with factor XII, is involved in the early stages of blood clotting through the intrinsic coagulation pathway. This process helps form blood clots, which protect the body by sealing off damaged blood vessels and preventing blood loss. Additionally, the interaction between plasma kallikrein and factor XII triggers the release of bradykinin, a protein that promotes inflammation. Bradykinin increases blood vessel wall permeability, allowing fluids to leak into body tissues, causing the swelling associated with inflammation.
