GRHPR : glyoxylate and hydroxypyruvate reductase
Description
The GRHPR (glyoxylate and hydroxypyruvate reductase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
The GRHPR gene provides instructions for making the glyoxylate and hydroxypyruvate reductase enzyme. This enzyme is crucial for preventing the accumulation of harmful glyoxylate by converting it to glycolate, which can be easily excreted. Furthermore, GRHPR converts hydroxypyruvate to D-glycerate. This D-glycerate is subsequently transformed into glucose by other enzymes, serving as an energy source for the body.
GRHPR has multiple enzymatic activities including hydroxy-pyruvate reductase, glyoxylate reductase and D-glycerate dehydrogenase. It catalyzes the reduction of hydroxypyruvate to D-glycerate and glyoxylate to glycolate. Conversely, it can oxidize D-glycerate to hydroxypyruvate.
