GALT : galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase

Description

The GALT gene provides instructions for making the enzyme galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT). This enzyme plays a crucial role in the metabolism of galactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. GALT converts galactose-1-phosphate into glucose-1-phosphate, which can then be used for energy production or to synthesize other important molecules. Individuals with GALT gene mutations can develop galactosemia, a rare genetic disorder that causes a buildup of galactose in the body, leading to various health problems.
