FDFT1

Description

The FDFT1 (farnesyl-diphosphate farnesyltransferase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 8.

Squalene synthase (FDFT1) catalyzes the synthesis of squalene from two farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) molecules. This reaction proceeds in two distinct steps: First, two molecules of FPP react to form presqualene diphosphate (PSQPP), releasing a proton and inorganic diphosphate. Second, PSQPP undergoes heterolysis, isomerization, and reduction with NADPH or NADH to generate squalene. FDFT1 is the first committed enzyme in the sterol biosynthesis pathway, meaning that it irreversibly commits the FPP substrate to cholesterol biosynthesis.

FDFT1 is also known as DGPT, ERG9, SQS, SQSD, SS.
