FANCI
Description
The FANCI gene plays a crucial role in the Fanconi Anemia (FA) pathway, a complex cellular mechanism responsible for repairing damaged DNA. This pathway is particularly important in handling interstrand crosslinks (ICLs), a type of DNA damage that can be caused by various agents, including chemotherapy drugs. FANCI, along with its partner protein FANCD2, forms a complex that acts as a central hub in the FA pathway, orchestrating the recruitment of other proteins involved in ICL repair. Mutations in the FANCI gene can lead to FA, a rare genetic disorder characterized by developmental abnormalities, bone marrow failure, and an increased risk of cancer. Understanding the role of FANCI in DNA repair is crucial for developing new therapies for FA and other diseases related to DNA damage.

FANCI and FANCD2 form a complex that resembles a pair of scissors, which are thought to cut the damaged DNA strands during repair.
