ERBB2

Description

The ERBB2 gene, also known as HER2, is a proto-oncogene that plays a crucial role in regulating cell growth, differentiation, and survival. It encodes a transmembrane receptor tyrosine kinase that binds to growth factors like epidermal growth factor (EGF), initiating signaling pathways that promote cell proliferation. In normal cells, ERBB2 expression is tightly controlled, but mutations or amplifications in the gene can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and cancer development.

Associated Diseases

Did you know?

ERBB2 amplification is found in about 20% of breast cancers, and patients with this amplification often have more aggressive tumors with a poorer prognosis.
