Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit F (eIF3f) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EIF3F gene.
EIF3F is a component of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex, which is essential for multiple stages of protein synthesis initiation. This complex associates with the 40S ribosome and recruits other initiation factors (eIF-1, eIF-1A, eIF-2:GTP:methionyl-tRNAi, and eIF-5) to form the 43S pre-initiation complex (43S PIC). It facilitates mRNA recruitment to the 43S PIC and subsequent scanning for the AUG start codon. Additionally, the eIF-3 complex plays a role in disassembling and recycling post-termination ribosomal complexes, preventing premature joining of ribosomal subunits before initiation. This complex specifically targets and initiates translation of a subset of mRNAs involved in cell proliferation, including those related to cell cycling, differentiation, and apoptosis. It utilizes different modes of RNA stem-loop binding to regulate translation, either activating or repressing.
