EIF2B4 : eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B subunit delta
Description
The EIF2B4 (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B subunit delta) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.
The EIF2B4 gene provides instructions for making the delta subunit of the eIF2B protein. The eIF2B protein regulates protein production in cells by interacting with eIF2, an initiation factor involved in starting protein synthesis. EIF2B can either increase protein synthesis by recycling energy-carrying molecules called GTP or decrease protein synthesis by binding to the initiation factor and becoming inactive. This regulation is crucial for the cell to adapt to changing conditions.
EIF2B4 is part of the eIF2B complex, which helps regulate protein synthesis by exchanging GDP for GTP on the eIF2 gamma subunit. This activity is controlled by the phosphorylation state of the eIF2 alpha subunit. When eIF2 is phosphorylated, EIF2B4's activity is repressed, leading to decreased protein synthesis.
