ECM1 : extracellular matrix protein 1

Description

The ECM1 (extracellular matrix protein 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

The ECM1 gene directs the production of a protein found in most tissues within the extracellular matrix, a complex network supporting cells. This protein binds to various structural proteins and contributes to cell growth and differentiation, including skin cell development. It may also regulate blood vessel formation. Four different versions of the ECM1 protein exist, with the most common and widespread being ECM1a.

ECM1 plays a role in endochondral bone formation, acting as a negative regulator of bone mineralization. It promotes angiogenesis by stimulating the proliferation of endothelial cells. Additionally, it inhibits the proteolytic activity of MMP9.

ECM1 is also known as URBWD.
