DUOX2 : dual oxidase 2

Description

The DUOX2 (dual oxidase 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 15.

The DUOX2 gene provides instructions for creating an enzyme called dual oxidase 2. This enzyme is present in the thyroid gland (located in the lower neck), salivary glands, the digestive tract, and airways of the throat and lungs. Dual oxidase 2 produces hydrogen peroxide, a chemical crucial for the final stages of thyroid hormone production in the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormones regulate growth, brain development, and metabolic processes in the body.

DUOX2 generates hydrogen peroxide, essential for the function of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and lactoperoxidase (LPO). This activity contributes to thyroid hormone synthesis and lactoperoxidase-mediated antimicrobial defense on mucosal surfaces. Additionally, DUOX2 might possess its own peroxidase activity through its N-terminal peroxidase-like domain.

DUOX2 is also known as LNOX2, NOXEF2, P138-TOX, TDH6, THOX2.
