DSG4 : desmoglein 4

Description

The DSG4 gene encodes desmoglein-4, a transmembrane protein that plays a crucial role in cell adhesion and maintaining the structural integrity of tissues. Desmoglein-4 is primarily found in the desmosomes, specialized cell junctions that connect adjacent epithelial cells. It interacts with other desmosomal proteins to form strong intercellular connections, contributing to the mechanical strength and stability of epithelial tissues. Mutations in the DSG4 gene can disrupt desmosome formation, leading to various skin and other tissue disorders.

Associated Diseases

Did you know?

DSG4 mutations are associated with a rare skin disorder called striate palmoplantar keratoderma, which causes thick, scaly skin on the palms and soles of the feet.
