DNAI1 : dynein axonemal intermediate chain 1

Description

The DNAI1 (dynein axonemal intermediate chain 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.

The DNAI1 gene provides instructions for making a protein that is part of a dynein complex, which is involved in the movement of cilia. Cilia are tiny, hair-like structures found on the surface of cells. The coordinated movement of cilia helps to move cells or fluids around them. Dynein is a motor protein that generates the force needed for cilia to move. DNAI1 specifically produces an intermediate chain protein that is part of the outer dynein arms (ODAs) within the core of cilia. These ODAs, along with inner dynein arms (IDAs), work together to bend the cilia back and forth. Different combinations of proteins make up the IDAs and ODAs, with DNAI1 producing one of the intermediate chain proteins found in ODAs.

DNAI1 is a component of the dynein complex, which is essential for the movement of respiratory cilia.

DNAI1 is also known as CILD1, DIC1, ICS1, PCD, oda6.
