DNAH9

Description

The DNAH9 (dynein axonemal heavy chain 9) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 17.

DNAH9 gene encodes the heavy chain subunit of axonemal dynein, a large multi-subunit molecular motor involved in ciliary and flagellar movement. Axonemal dynein attaches to microtubules and uses ATP hydrolysis to mediate movement. The gene produces at least two transcript variants, with additional variants described but their full-length nature yet to be determined.

DNAH9 is a force-generating protein essential for the beating of cilia in the respiratory epithelium. It produces force towards the minus ends of microtubules. Dynein has ATPase activity and the force-producing power stroke is thought to occur upon release of ADP.

DNAH9 is also known as CILD40, DNAH17L, DNEL1, DYH9, Dnahc9, HL-20, HL20.
