Description
The CTU2 (cytosolic thiouridylase subunit 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 16.
CTU2 (previously named C16orf84) is a human gene found on chromosome 16. Its mRNA encodes a longer protein isoform. This protein resides in the cytoplasm and likely contributes to tRNA modification.
CTU2 is a key player in the modification of tRNA molecules, specifically in the 2-thiolation process. It adds a sulfur atom to the uridine nucleotide at the ‘wobble‘ position of specific tRNAs like tRNA(Lys), tRNA(Glu), and tRNA(Gln). This modification is crucial for the proper decoding of genetic information during protein synthesis. CTU2 achieves this by partnering with another protein, CTU1/ATPBD3, and using a sulfur donor molecule called URM1. Together, they attach the sulfur atom to the uridine base, ensuring accurate translation of the genetic code.
