CTSK

Description

The CTSK (cathepsin K) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.

Cathepsin K, encoded by the CTSK gene, is a lysosomal cysteine protease involved in bone remodeling and resorption. This enzyme is predominantly found in osteoclasts and breaks down bone and cartilage by degrading elastin, collagen, and gelatin. Cathepsin K inhibitors have potential for treating osteoporosis. This enzyme's activity is also linked to the loss of lung elasticity in emphysema. Cathepsin K expression is stimulated by inflammatory cytokines released after tissue injury. It is also expressed in breast cancers, where it may contribute to tumor invasiveness.

CTSK is also known as CTS02, CTSO, CTSO1, CTSO2, PKND, PYCD.
