COLEC11 : collectin subfamily member 11

Description

The COLEC11 (collectin subfamily member 11) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 2.

The COLEC11 gene provides instructions for making a protein called collectin kidney 1 (CL-K1). This protein is involved in a series of steps called the lectin complement pathway, which is thought to help direct the movement (migration) of cells during development before birth to form the organs and systems of the body. The lectin complement pathway appears to be particularly important in directing the migration of neural crest cells. These cells give rise to various tissues including many tissues in the face and skull, glands that produce hormones (endocrine glands), and portions of the nervous system. After birth, the lectin complement pathway is involved in the immune system.

Collectin-11, also known as Collectin kidney protein 1, is a lectin that plays a role in innate immunity, apoptosis, and embryogenesis (PubMed:23954398, PubMed:25912189, PubMed:21258343). It binds to self and non-self glycoproteins presenting high mannose oligosaccharides with at least one terminal alpha-1,2-linked mannose epitope (PubMed:25912189). It primarily recognizes the terminal disaccharide of the glycan (PubMed:25912189). It also recognizes a subset of fucosylated glycans and lipopolysaccharides (PubMed:17179669, PubMed:25912189). Collectin-11 plays a role in innate immunity by binding to non-self sugars presented by microorganisms and activating the complement through the recruitment of MAPS1 (PubMed:20956340, PubMed:25912189). It also plays a role in apoptosis by binding in a calcium-independent manner to the DNA present at the surface of apoptotic cells and activating the complement in response to this binding (Probable). Finally, Collectin-11 plays a role in development, probably serving as a guidance cue during the migration of neural crest cells and other cell types during embryogenesis (PubMed:21258343, PubMed:28301481). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17179669, ECO:0000269|PubMed:20956340, ECO:0000269|PubMed:21258343, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23954398, ECO:0000269|PubMed:25912189, ECO:0000269|PubMed:28301481, ECO:0000305|PubMed:20956340, ECO:0000305|PubMed:23954398}

COLEC11 is also known as 3MC2, CL-11, CL-K1-I, CL-K1-II, CL-K1-IIa, CL-K1-IIb, CLK1.
