COG5 : component of oligomeric golgi complex 5

Description

The COG5 (component of oligomeric golgi complex 5) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 7.

The COG5 gene provides instructions for making a protein called component of oligomeric Golgi complex 5 (COG5). COG5 is part of the conserved oligomeric Golgi (COG) complex, which functions within the Golgi apparatus, a cell structure where newly produced proteins are modified. One key process in the Golgi is glycosylation, where sugar molecules are attached to proteins and fats, modifying them for diverse functions. The COG complex plays a role in protein transport within the Golgi, particularly in retrograde transport, which moves proteins backward through the structure. This retrograde transport is crucial for recycling Golgi proteins and ensuring their correct location for efficient glycosylation. Proteins are transported in vesicles, sac-like structures that attach to the Golgi membrane and release their contents into the Golgi. The COG complex controls the tethering of these vesicles to the Golgi membrane.

COG5 is essential for the proper functioning of the Golgi apparatus.

COG5 is also known as CDG2I, GOLTC1, GTC90.
