The CLCF1 (cardiotrophin like cytokine factor 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 11.
The CLCF1 gene provides instructions for making a protein called cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1 (CLCF1). This protein forms a complex with CRLF1, a similar protein produced by the CRLF1 gene. This complex, known as the CRLF1/CLCF1 protein complex, binds to the ciliary neurotrophic factor receptor (CNTFR) on various cell surfaces. This binding triggers cellular signaling that influences cell development and function. The CNTFR signaling pathway is crucial for the development and maintenance of the nervous system, promoting the survival of neurons, especially motor neurons. This pathway also plays a role in the sympathetic nervous system, regulating sweating. The CNTFR pathway is vital for the development of nerve cells controlling sweat gland activity. Studies indicate that the CNTFR signaling pathway may also have functions outside the nervous system, potentially being involved in the inflammatory response and the development and maintenance of bone tissue. However, more research is needed to understand its role in these processes.
