CHIT1
Description
The CHIT1 (chitinase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 1.
Chitinases are enzymes that break down chitin, a component of fungal cell walls and the exoskeletons of some animals. They are found in organisms that need to reshape their own chitin or digest the chitin of fungi or animals. Chitinivorous organisms include many bacteria, fungi, and plants. For example, barley seeds produce chitinase, which is found in the seed aleurone during development. Leaves also produce chitinase, which is induced by powdery mildew.
CHIT1 is also known as CHI3, CHIT, CHITD.
