C1QB

Description

The C1QB gene encodes for a protein subunit of the C1q protein complex, a key component of the complement system. This system plays a crucial role in innate immunity, acting as the first line of defense against pathogens and triggering inflammatory responses. C1q is composed of 18 polypeptide chains, with C1QB being one of the three types of chains. It forms trimers that associate with other trimers to form the hexameric C1q molecule. C1q binds to pathogens, immune complexes, and apoptotic cells, initiating a cascade of events that ultimately leads to the lysis of target cells. This process also promotes inflammation and the recruitment of immune cells to the site of infection or injury.
