Description
The ASS1 (argininosuccinate synthase 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9.
The ASS1 gene provides instructions for creating argininosuccinate synthase 1, an enzyme essential for the urea cycle, which occurs in liver cells. The urea cycle manages excess nitrogen produced during protein breakdown. This excess nitrogen is converted into urea, which is then eliminated in urine. Argininosuccinate synthase 1 plays a crucial role in the third step of the urea cycle, combining citrulline and aspartate, two protein building blocks, to form argininosuccinic acid. This molecule is further processed in subsequent steps to produce urea.
