Description
The AGA (aspartylglucosaminidase) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 4.
The AGA gene provides instructions for producing the enzyme aspartylglucosaminidase. This enzyme operates within lysosomes, cellular recycling centers. It breaks down complex sugar chains (oligosaccharides) attached to specific proteins (glycoproteins). Specifically, the enzyme cleaves glycoproteins between asparagine, an amino acid, and N-acetylglucosamine, a sugar molecule. This cleavage is a final step in lysosomal glycoprotein breakdown.
Cleaves the GlcNAc-Asn bond, linking oligosaccharides to the peptide of asparagine-linked glycoproteins.
