AFP
Description
The AFP gene, short for alpha-fetoprotein, encodes a protein primarily produced by the fetal liver. This protein plays a crucial role in fetal development, particularly in liver function and differentiation. During pregnancy, AFP levels in maternal blood are monitored as a marker for potential fetal abnormalities. After birth, AFP levels decline significantly, with only trace amounts remaining in adults. In some cases, elevated AFP levels in adults can indicate liver cancer or other conditions.
